Bilingual Life 2

Bilingual life 2- reading

Hello! Thank you for stopping by our blog. This is my second blog entry about raising a bilingual child. Everyday is a fun adventure with with so many preciously cute moments.
At my home we do "one parent, one language." This means my wife never speaks English and I never speak Japanese when talking to my daughter. By doing this consistently our daughter is now able to distinguish what to say to each parent. For example she will say "This one","yes, please," etc when talking to me but when talking to her mother she says "kore hoshii","kotti iku" etc. It is cute to watch and it takes her no time to switch between the two languages. She has recently turned 2 years old so it is very rewarding to watch how much language she has been picking up recently.
Most of her language ability is thanks to the one parent, one language rule. The other thing we do to support her language acquisition is to shower her in books and read to her quite a bit. I have even taken home old GEA textbooks and let her read them. She likes looking at the pictures and often brings them to me so I can read them to her.

English Time is not something to put in a bag and take out when you want, but English time is all the time, just like Japanese time. We leave out even text books for her to look at and read.
I have checked multiple web sites on how to raise a bilingual child. Many of the sites say the same thing. They say reading to your child in English is one of the best things you can do. You may think it is a simple solution but reading aloud on a regular basis will have a great impact on your child's relationship to the language as well as books in general.
My wife and I read quite a lot to our daughter. For the times we can't read to her she always has access to books. She is surrounded by regular books, talking pen Anpanman books (English and Japanese) and Disney's English curriculum (also with a talking pen). This is very expensive but it is very good.
Please try reading to your child in both Japanese and English. If you can't please consider purchasing books with a talking pen or CD. Your child will love them and it will give you time to bond with your child and participate in their growth in English. Thank you.
literacy and books in general.
