American Life: February/Valentine’s Day

American Life: February/Valentine’s Day

Well it’s February already! This past year went really quickly! Spring is right around the corner. The month of February is well known for St. Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in America but it is slightly different than the Japanese version.  Americans celebrate Valentine's Day each year on February 14th by exchanging cards or letters, giving each other gifts of chocolate or flowers, and eating out in restaurants. Many people use the holiday as an opportunity to give gifts such as jewelry to their sweetheart. While it isn’t unusual for couples to exchange gifts it is traditionally the male who does most of the gift giving. It is the opposite of Valentine’s Day in Japan. In Japan girls or women give boys or men a gift, often homemade. Then the gift is returned by the man on White Day. There is no White Day in America.

Who was the person St. Valentine, and why do we celebrate the holiday St. Valentine’s Day? St. Valentine was a 4th Century priest in Rome. According to legend he was put in jail for refusing to stop doing Christian marriages. I assume it was his commitment to love in the face of punishment that we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday.

In my opinion, the Japanese version of Valentine’s Day is much better than the western version. In Japan both male and female can both receive something. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be a large pressure on either side to be overly extravagant.

I am not sure what elementary students do now but I have memories of making mailboxes out of tissue boxes and putting them on our school desks and all the students would walk around and put the cards in each other’s mailboxes. We then took them home and read them.

Please enjoy your Valentine’s Day and I hope you get lots of chocolates!
