I have always had an interest in Japan, and its culture since I was a child. I have a bachelor of arts degree in cultural anthropology, so coming to Japan was perfect fit for my interest and studies. I didn’t know at that time that studying abroad would change my life so drastically and would eventually lead me to a career in teaching.

After completing university in America I was able to return to Japan to find work in Tohoku. In 1999, I taught English as an ALT for three years at high school in a small town in Fukushima Prefecture. I was working under the JET Programme, which is overseen by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Until that time I had never taught English before. I quickly found out that teaching was challenging, but it also could be fun and rewarding. I have been teaching ever since. After teaching at high school I went on to teach at a large English Conversation school for 5 years, and started teaching at Mebae in 2007. I have been teaching for about twenty years.

Since coming to Mebae I have had the opportunity to focus on teaching small children. Teaching small children was something that was very different than teaching at high school. I was involved with Global Kids at Mebae for some time and often find myself scheduling lessons with smaller children even now. I’d like to think that teaching small children is my forte. They are full of smiles and energy. Small children learn new language skills effortlessly. It truly is amazing to watch my students grow.

I am proud to say we are starting a new English class this year called “Morning Club.” Morning Club is a class where small children can learn English with their mothers. We will sing many songs, learn some dances and basic vocabulary. It will be very fun. I am looking forward to starting this course because it will be a fantastic opportunity to have communication between parent, child and teacher. This will be a place where we can learn and grow together. I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

私は子供の頃からずっと日本とその文化に興味を持っていました。私は文化人類学の学士号を持っているので、日本に来ることは私の興味と研究にはぴったりでした。その当時、私は留学することが私の人生をそれほど劇的に変え、そしてついに私を教育のキャリアへと導くことを知りませんでした。

Mebaeに来て以来、私は小さな子供たちを教えることに集中する機会がありました。小さな子供たちを教えることは、高校で教えることとは非常に異なるものでした。私はしばらく前からMebaeでGlobal Kidsに関わっていましたが、今でも小さい子供たちとのレッスンのスケジュールを組むことがよくあります。私は小さな子供たちを教えることは私の強みだと思いたいのですが。彼らは笑顔とエネルギーに満ちています。小さな子供たちは楽に新しい言語のスキルを学びます。私の学生が成長するのを見るのは本当に素晴らしいです。
