June 2022 American Life: School is Out!
Hi everyone, thank you for coming to visit our blog again this month. It's getting warmer and warmer each day but the rainy season has yet to come. That's okay. I'm in no hurry for it to come. How about you?
We are already halfway through the year and just about ready for summer to start officially. As you may or may not know, many schools in America finish their school year in June. The school year in America is from September to June. So it is about 9 months depending on school cancellations due to snow and bad weather etc. Some school districts either start early so at the end of or in the middle of August or go to the end of June to make up for the days. Today I wanted to talk a little about “Field Day.” Field Day was my elementary school’s sports day. Junior high school and up typically did not have Field Day.
When I was growing up I can still remember the excitement of the school year ending this month. Typically we would have what we called field day during the first week or so of June. Field day is what my school called Sports Day and we would have different color teams and each team would have all the grades from first to sixth grade. We would have a white team, black team, red team, green team etc. I remember having lots of different typical American events. Some of the events that I remember having at field day were the three-legged race, tug of war, potato sack race, and carrying a golf ball in a spoon race, the tire jump race, and a running relay. We would have events all morning and we would have a few events after lunch then go back to our homerooms and eat popsicles and wait for the results to be announced over the loudspeaker. I still remember the smell of the tires we jumped through at the tire jump race and the smell of the pinnies we used to have to wear. I remember it very clearly even though it was such a long time ago.
As far as I'm aware, most schools in Japan have their sports day in the summer or in the autumn. In America, at least 40 years ago, the school where I went had the school sports festival in June. Such fun memories.
Many students right now in America are very happy because they have already started summer holidays. They will have about two and a half months off school and I'm sure they will keep their family very busy watching them .
Many school teachers have reduced hours or no working hours during the summer holiday. My sister is a teacher and I think she has to go into school for a week or so after school ends and then a week before school begins. So school teachers also get a nice 2-month holiday over the summer. During this time many teachers get a part-time job or decide to earn a few extra dollars by tutoring at the school to help the kids catch up, or teaching summer school. Other teachers do unrelated things like painting, carpentry, mechanics, or travel. Either way, this is exciting time of year for teachers and students alike.
I will finish this month's blog entry with just a reminder that next Sunday is Father's Day. Please don't forget the most important father on his special day, and wish him a happy Father's Day.
The weather will get hot and sticky soon. So everyone please take care and the next time we talk I'm sure it'll be your summer holiday too. Until then, take care.
