April 2023 American Life: Comparing Golden Week to American Holidays

Hello! Thank you for stopping by our blog again this month! Golden Week is here! We all love Golden Week, I am sure but today I wanted to talk about the Golden Week holidays as they compare to holidays in America.

As you already know (but sometimes it is interesting to see it written in English), Golden Week is a series of national holidays in Japan that occur from late April to early May. The holidays include Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day. The consecutive holidays create a week-long break for many Japanese workers and students.

Compared to American holidays, Golden Week is longer and more structured. American holidays typically occur on a specific date and are not consecutive. However, both cultures use holidays as a way to celebrate, rest, and spend time with family and friends.

During Golden Week, many Japanese people travel domestically or internationally. This leads to increased tourism and crowds at popular destinations. On the other hand, American holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are more focused on spending time with family and eating a big meal together.

One unique aspect of Golden Week is the celebration of Children's Day, which involves the flying of koinobori, or carp-shaped windsocks, to symbolize the strength and perseverance needed for children to grow up healthy and strong. In the US, Children's Day is not widely celebrated, but there are other holidays that honor children such as Mother's Day and Father's Day. I remember asking my parents many, many years ago “Why don’t we celebrate children's day in America?” I still remember my mom’s answer. She said “Everyday is Children’s Day, Justin.” I have a child of my own now so I know this is true.

Overall, while there are some differences in how Japan and America celebrate holidays, both cultures place importance on taking time off to rest and spend time with loved ones.

No matter how you celebrate your Golden Week we hope that you have fun and we are waiting to hear all about your travels and adventures!

See you all in May!
